I built and use 5 in daily service on my own 18" gauge firewood hauling Tramway, 3/4 sized copies of the type used on the West Side Lumber Co. lines. In my case, a measured stomp on the crank of a well oiled and properly adjusted throw will flip up the weighted handle without needing to bend.

The NZR of old used a weighted points lever, I never had any back issues using those, I guess it's a matter of how you set it and maybe "viewer perception". :)
