The surveys that resulted in the current 7.79 Mile long tunnel, included several longer bores that were rejected for cost reasons or inability to obtain necessary land parcels. One proposed tunnel to the North of both the original & current tunnels would have been 11+ miles long, however total trackage involved would have been greater than the alignment eventually selected.
