Low water at Lake Shasta

The extremely low water in Shasta has unveiled some real treasures, four of the original RR tunnels and one steel RR bridge that are normally under at least 100' of water. Wondering why the steel through truss bridge was not scrapped during WW-II as the lake was filled.
Old hwy bridges have also appeared at Doney, Charley, Sugarloaf, Salt and O'Brian Creeks. All are now visible except Pitt river bridge, this one is way too close to the dam to ever appear. This is all exciting for a bridge fan (freak) like me, worth the 800 mile round trips.
Can anyone tell me why there is a RR "Y" north of Lakehead, were the northbound helpers added here rather than at Dunsmuir?
