In 1977, the lake level was 218 feet down as compared to 154 feet today. Many structures, artifacts, and roads were open to the sky for the first time in 30 years -- now 30 years later again, these elements are begining to show again.

I was there in October of 1977 -- a week before the rain begain to fall, taking photographs, making sketches and loggin numerous artifacts -- all of which I left in place. One of the most interesting structures is the railroad bridge at the Sacramento River.

Long exposed to the air by that October, the structure and tunnel were completely dry -- as were ten of the twelve towns drouned when the lake was finally filled after WWII.

The RR 'Y' after Lakehead I believe was the original connection to the rail line that became submerged in the 1940s.

To see the photo of the bridge, please go to:

I plan to publish the book: Below Lake Shasta, in 2009.

Best Regards, Douglas Westfall, Author & Publisher.
