A great circle route from SF to Shanghai, Hong Kong or Guangzhou will always be shorter than from LA to those 3 cities.
Previously, you also wrote "to and from the east", a distance of about 1600 miles north to south.
By choosing one of many starting points from the mid to southeast coast, one can easily construct an arbitrary land & sea route with fewer miles, vs. an overland route through the Rockies, Wasatch, Basin & Range and Sierras. And the converse is true: a shorter route exists across the mountains, when starting from the north east.
A great circle route on land across the continental US is pretty much irrelevant. Hence, my comparison of GC routes from SFO or LAX to Shanghai.
FYI: Guangzhou is the present-day name for Canton. (Much like Peking -> Beijing.)
