The NP tried to cut off some mileage across Washington State before WW1. They surveyed from Ritzville to Ellensburg, with the idea of bypassing the dip to the southern part of the state via Pasco and Yakima. The cutoff was graded from Ritzville to a junction on a branch line north of Moses Lake, and track was laid on part of it. No other part was built.

Part of this line can be seen along I90 between Ritzville and Moses Lake. Track survives today on the part that was laid, from Schrag to Bassett Junction, run now by the Columbia Basin Railway.
