You're forgetting what really paid for the great passenger trains and their being on time: mail.
the mail contracts supported them, and usually had strict on time performance clauses. Passenger fares were essentially gravy. When the USPS changed to a air, the rr couldn't wait to get rid of their passenger trains. The USPS, by the way, generally became slower, too.
