The Republican Party didn't even have any de facto power until Newt and the boys took over Congress in 1994. The Democrats had rock solid control of both houses of Congress when Amtrak was created. Nixon was a RINO, who probably instituted more leftist programs than Kennedy, Johnson, and Carter combined.

Ergo, Amtrak was the creation of liberals - Democrats and that RINO administration - which of course is consistent with liberal philosophy of government control of things normally private.

It is amazing that what happened to the US railroad industry circa 1970's is being mirrored today by the US auto industry. Government forces regulations that slowly strangle the industry, then the government "bails out" the industry it helped to destroy in the first place! If GM, Ford, and Chrysler get their bail out money (with the predictable strings attached), look for all three to fail miserably in about 5 years from now.
