The 'dark ages' only happened in the West. When Constantine moved to his eponymous capital, civilisation continued at a high level. There was a serious dip in the reign of Justinian the Great, courtesy of both a plague episode and a 'sunless' summer (536 AD) caused by a volcanic eruption but the Eastern Empire never degraded to the level of Gaul, Britain, Germany, Italy.
