Metrolink Third Largest Source of Rail Fatalities

As concerns mount about the safety of Metrolink trains, a newspaper analysis has found the commuter rail system has a far higher fatality rate than most larger systems throughout the country and was responsible for nearly two-thirds of the nation's passenger deaths over the past six years.

From this weekend's Whittier Daily News:

Metrolink, the nation's seventh-largest commuter rail system in terms of ridership, has experienced the third-highest number of overall fatalities - including those onboard and on the ground - over the past decade.

And over the past six years, 39 out of 61 passenger fatalities across the nation involved Metrolink trains, according to an analysis of Federal Railroad Administration data.

The fact that Metrolink disasters in Chatsworth in September and Glendale in 2005 accounted for nearly all the 39 deaths does not make the high fatality rate any less disturbing, critics said.

"I think this is a major wake-up call for Metrolink," said U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., referring to the startling fatality figures. "There is no question in my mind but that Metrolink has real problems."

This is interesting in light of OPRRMS, who may be a Connex/Veolia employee, basically saying this is no biggie.
