I too, find this statistic interesting but for differing reasons. A more disturbing statistic, may be or may not be distrubing, would be the amount of METROLINK train accidents aganist those attributable to METROLINK neglence. This statistic may or may not indicate that METROLINK need to evalue train service personnel training or need for a new operation contractor.
If what you say is correct, that 39 deaths are centered in the Gendale and Chatsworth accidents, then I would say to you that one accident, the Chatsworth accident, does not a trend or a flashing red light make. The jury is still out on this one, even though many conclusions have been reached, and many lessons are being learned by all - UP and METROLINK. It does not make METROLINK any less safe than any other commuter operation. The Gendale accident was not the fault of METROLINK, and the gentleman (if I may call him that), who caused the accident, has been prosecuted and found guilty.
Now, if we have a statistic of all METROLINK train operational accidents, whether or not death of passengers was involved, that indicated METROLINK was a fault in the majority, or even at a large percentage, of the time, then METROLINK does have a problem that needs solving now.
