Just thought I'd toss this in: the SP measured a passenger car's length over the end sills and assigned classifications according to length and usage. In both the Harrimans and the "80 footers" the end sills are under the thresholds of the doorways leading from the platforms into the car interior. Thus, those 80 footers were classified as 72-IC-n, where n is the series of car, as in 1 = first order, 2 = second order, etc. So the first order of 80-footers is "72-IC-1", which means "72 feet long, Interurban Coach, first order". The actual length of these cars over pulling faces is about 80-84 feet. Since the switching crews in SF and SJ were more concerned with actual car length, they called them "80 footers". Sorry, but I don't have this info for the Harrimans.
