It was noteworthy that friends of the family lived in an old farmhouse on Handy Street in Orange -- and the house had a basement !!! I had only seen such niceties when visiting the grandparents in ... Scranton.
BTW -- Lots of older homes in Orange County have crawl spaces under them. I spent many an UNhappy day down there, as a Plumber's Helper / Mole for my Uncle the Plumber. LOTSA bugs & creepy - crawlies down there, along with living & dead rats !!! Why so many homeowners planted IVY -- it's just a magnet for rats, snails, & gophers -- I'll never understand.
