When working on Santa Fe Star Lake project back in in mid 1970s, the chief engineer told me that he went to a Conrail demo of laying welded rail at 1 mile per day. They were very proud of that. The Santa Fe chief engineer didn't have the heart to tell them that Santa Fe was doing 5 miles per day!
