Longer term, gas prices are going to be affected by the switch to electric vehicles. Somewhere between five and ten years from now the majority of new vehicles sold will be electric. From there the percentage will only increase. People who have driven an electric car don't want to go back. For now the main exceptions are those who need to drive more than 300 miles without a break, or into the back of beyond, and those who have no place to charge. Those are mainly apartment dwellers with no charging available at work. With the continual improvement of batteries and the increasing number of public charging locations these difficulties are slowly being lifted.

On the other hand, those who can't afford new cars are going to get a break as the price of used ICE vehicles will stay low and (because of reduced demand) the price of gas will be depressed. But eventually even the true petrol-heads will switch.
