I was in the WP's Engineering Dept. at that time. My boss wasn't concerned about them at all, but was interested in seing how they handled the mant 10-degree curves in the Canyon. My favorite reaction was in talking to the West End Roadmaster a couple of days later. He about went pale when I mentioned it to him. At that time, the First Sub (Altamont Pass included) had some remaining 100# rail in place on the mainline. I think he had visions of broken joint bars everywhere he looked.
