I used to do the raw html thing to call up images from one site to another, but I got a couple strident emails telling me to stop doing it, that I was using up their bandwidth.

You can still post links (which I hope you'll do). That will get other complaints of course, but truth is, even the most innocuous post ends up annoying someone, who'll complain... it's the nature of the internet.
