Third rail pickup shoes are not compatible with high(er) speeds. For various reasons, there have to be gaps in the third rail. On either side of this gap, the third rail has a vertical angle (slope) to engage to shoe. These angles are relatively steep, which is not a problem at moderate speeds.
But, hit one of these transition angles at a high speed, and it can doe serous damage to the third rail shoe.
On the other hand, catenary, provided it is built to the necessary standards, can handle high speeds just fine.
