Remember Steamtown was a political creation of a local politician to up the economy of the failing Scranton area. NPS didn't have a site dedicated to "the age of steam" and steam's role in the industrial development of the country (Golden Spike doesn't count because it was an "event" of national significance). Hence, Steamtown was born.....giving a home to the available collection of Nelson Blount.
If your site involves events, activities, or developments of national significance, involving the lives of people significant to our past, or contains significant architectural, landscape or engineering developments, or has potential archaeological significance........and you can convince your state SHPO (State Historic Preservation Office) to have the National Park Service make a detailed analysis of the significance of the site, you might have a ghost of a chance.
Mt Rainier is already a National Park, Steamtown is already the NPS's "train park," and interpeting logging history is not high on the NPS agenda.
