Don't really understand your question. UP 844/8444/844 was NEVER retired and "ran" in excursion service since the late 1950s or early 1960s. The 3985 however was not restore to service until 1980, in order to attend the Grad Opening of the California State RR Museum in Sacramento, in may of 1981. Thus 3985 handled excursions all over the UP system from Chicago, to Houston to St Paul to LA to Portland, OR. That is a pretty good record, in my book.
