In California, the name Fort Bragg was in use before the Civil War.
While it is true that Fort Bragg is named for Lt. Col. Braxton Bragg (of Mexican War fame), a military post by that name was established there in 1857, before Bragg joined the Confederate Army.
The city was established there in 1885 and was named after the military post.
