Acknowledging and recognizing our collective history, as regards the Civil War , is certainly important. But we erect monuments to, and name facilities after, individuals that we respect and choose to honor.
Deciding to cease showing public respect and honor for those who actively fought against the United States, and fought for the preservation of the institution of slavery, is not seeking to remove the history. It is acknowledging that some of that history is not to be praised and glorified.
