The historical precedent runs very much the other way. Bad times means the pols and party in power are turned out by the opposition party in the next election:
1920: WWI debacle plus Spanish flu brings Harding to power amid hard turn to the right.
1932: Depression ousts Hoover; FDR makes hard turn left.
1952: IKE beats Adlai as the Democratic Party is labeled the party of war with Korea conflict.
1968: LBJ quits and Humphrey loses amid Vietnam War discontent.
1976: Gerald Ford scandal of pardoning Nixon leads to Jimmy Carter victory.
1980: Reagan beats Carter during economic problems and Iranian fiasco and RR turns hard right.
And the beat goes on. One thing I feel is pretty certain at the end of the Biden-Pelosi regime China will be the world's superpower. China is already getting pretty frisky, cyberattacking Australia.
