Re: 4 Dead After SUV Flies off of Carquinez Bridge and Hits UP Freight Cars in Crockett, Calif
Very early in my driving life, when I was about the same age as this young driver, which was a long time ago, I was had a non-contact experience similar to, but not nearly as dramatic, as what I saw in that dashcam video [
www.youtube.com].
I was heading west on the top deck of the Bay Bridge and took the Fremont Street offramp, which is a righthand turn. While I was still in the turn at the top of the ramp, I moved from the right-hand lane to the left lane, so I could turn left at the bottom of the ramp. Although I wasn't going particularly fast while doing this maneuver, I was absolutely appalled at how quickly the left-hand wall of the ramp was coming toward me, and made the necessary correction. I also learned from that experience to try to avoid making a lane change from the inside of a curve toward the outside of the curve.
Looking at that dashcam video, it seems that this young driver, perhaps for the first time, was in a situation that was the mirror image of mine. I saw her starting in the left lane, and then moving over toward the right lane (inside-of-curve-to-outside-of-curve), possibly to put herself in a non-Fastrack lane at the toll plaza. I think she, like me, had never made a similar maneuver before, and over-corrected when she saw how quickly she was approaching the right-hand edge of the roadway. In her situation, it seems, she didn't have the margin for error correction that I'd been blessed with.
