Yeah, SP never owned these units at all. In fact, SP owned very few of it's locomotives, mostly the older ones. The rest were leased, including some older ones that had been paid off, but were sold and then leased back by the cash-short SP. Some of those leases were blood-curdlingly expensive. Some of those leases are for very long terms, too.

Anyway, since neither SP nor UP owns the units, the actual owner (in this case, Helm), can have repair/overhaul work done anywhere they want, including at the leasing railroad's shops.
