Because the terms "control unit" and "remote unit" are essentially much more modern terms. The originals would have been the "Cow" and the "Calf" MU consist, i.e. both having a prime mover (Diesel engine & generator. The "Mother" and "Slug" concept was/is quite a bit different since the "Slug" has no prime mover, and gets all its traction motor power directly from the "Mother Unit".
