getting old and conservative - Here's the statement you made:
I am more and more and more persuaded by the conservative idea that massive public works projects do more harm than good, and that New Deal projects of the 1930's created and sustained the Great Depression.
Jornalero del muro fronterizo's question is reasonable. You should back up your claim with more than cussing.
I don't feel that the New Deal ended the Depression, but I don't think it created it, made it worse or extended it. The public works projects provided badly needed jobs for many, many Americans while building projects that had and continue to have lasting benefits for Americans.
If you believe that World War II and only World War II got us out of the Depression, keep in mind that New Deal programs financed production of some of the weapons used in the War.
Circling back to railroads, one legitimate criticism of the New Deal was while a lot of the funding went to road projects, the very little of the money was spent on rail transportation. The one exception of which I am aware was further electrification of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
