For those who haven't been following this, this is the first step of a three step process. I make no claims as to how probable the final (or intermediate) result will be, just that this is what has been proposed.

1. The presently proposed train Las Vegas - Victorville.
2. Extension of the line from Victorville to Palmdale. This allows a (slow) all rail trip with an across platform transfer at Palmdale to Los Angeles Union Station.
3. After construction of CAHSR Palmdale - Burbank - LAUS (no cracks from the peanut gallery) an all electric high speed connection Las Vegas - Los Angeles.
