Years ago working for a class 1 handling a number of hazerdous movements we tried to interest our people and the General Code people in the use of the point-point police radio freq. 155.37 for use by our people in emergency situations on all RRs in US.
The new 99 channel radios were coming into strong use by all the RRs and it would have been simple to add 155.370 Mhz to all radios. This would have allowed all trains in the US to have immediate contact with police sheriff and state police agencies no matter where they were at as ALL departments moniter this nationwide frequency.
The idea recieved little attention and apparently died as cell phones were coming into use. I personally believe this still would be the way to go for emergency use by the RRs.....
