Since nobody has bothered to answer your straight-forward question yet...

Nothing rare about it at all. GN and NP steam was relatively common on the SP&S; GN much more so than NP.

The SP&S formed the connection between GN's Inside Gateway and the rest of the GN system: GN from Bieber, CA to Klamath Falls, OR... then over the SP to Chemult, OR... more GN trackage to Bend, OR... followed by SP&S to the Columbia River where trains either went west to Portland, Vancouver, as well as connecting north to Seattle, or east to Pasco and then on to Spokane.

While SP&S power was typically used over the portion from Bend to either Vancouver or Spokane, it was not uncommon for GN steam to also work these routes, either during busy times or in-transit for maintenance or reassignment.

Much of the SP&S steam fleet was actually ex-GN and ex-NP.
