This is a multi-billion $ corporation that spends a lot of money on operational analysis. If a lack of carmen were the culprit they'd hire faster than you can say "SP sucks". The lawyers and bean counters would never allow excess liability for mechanical failures due to a reduced workforce.

Railfans may not like it, but UP's in business to make as much money as possible--just like any other company. Their business just happens to be rail transportation. Minimizing expenses and maximizing profits is just part of the game no matter what the product or service may be.
