Several factors involved; size of feeder cable, weight of "train" size of catenary or third rail. Basically it all boils down to Ohm's Law; Volts x Amps = Watts. If you have "x" number of amps and "x" voltage, then you have your limit on load you can use; number of cars in the train in the circuit. The trains draw a certain amount of watts and the volts and amps are limited by structural design.
