The NP originally went from Portland to Seattle by going up the A line and a ferry crossing at Kalama. Then they built north. Now the UP comes to build and they built the current bridge across the Columbia river and built north. The NP then gave concessions to the UP and to stop two lines the NP was able to use the new bridge and the UP was able to use the NP line north to Tacoma. This is a simple message and I am sure there is more. The SP&S was not built yet, so people forget that UP owned the line in Vancouver first.
