For what it's worth:

President Eisenhower was of German descent, but he didn't speak German because his grandfather decreed upon arriving in America, the family would not use the language of the Old Country.

Admiral Chester Nimitz was also of German descent, and he did speak German.

Both were born in the good ol' US of A (V.S. if you speak German).

Lawrence Welk, on the other hand, although born in one of the Dakotas, didn't learn English until he was about 15.

And yes, it was a rather sloppy photoshop job, detectable almost right away. Never mind the concrete ties and power switch machine -- the NWP got rid of all its power switches when the suburban service ended in 1940.
