I don't think the disc brake was at fault. We had them on the gallery cars on the commutes in the City. Once you operated with them, You just had to have a little background in their use
Most of the SPs passenger equipment (officers cars, etc.) had been changed over in the late 60s or early 70s.
All that was left was the old "Subs". They were cast iron shoes used right to the end.
The old heads on the commutes used to know just how much air to give both type of cars. They would use the main brake valve to "Pop" the air in order to get a harder set but the train didn't go into emergency.
These guys were artist in operating the commutes. Some signals would be red but clear to yellow just before you got to them.
There has to be someone still alive that could tell some stories on those trains.
