Jason, there was no such thing as New Jersey Transit in 1978. It was a NJDOT owned E8, you are correct, but NJDOT was not a railroad, like NJT. Conrail actually ran the trains. NJDOT just owned the equipment (sort of like the State of California today with the Amtrak Capitols).
