They do run freight on the broad gauge. There are several lines that serve northern and eastern Victoria that are broad gauge. Some but not all have been converted to standard gauge but the program to do more has been held up due to problems with the first line converted. It ran way over budget and there are hints of corruption, etc.

Broad gauge is 1600 mm which works out to 5 feet 3 inches.
