I could see trains for a major event like Coachella, to take some of the crazies off the road. Otherwise, I'm leaning toward your view of the prospects for commuter trains in the area. Still, studies have been done that suggest a demand sufficient to support at least a lightweight service, but they might IMO need to be revisited after Covid. BOB2 (the real one) and Transportation Planner are the experts on this stuff.
