Well, that tunnel was by-passed in the 60s. The hill was moving and the portal itself, was leaning to the east. I think the "wreck" you are looking at, was a derailment that involved a train, that was caused an L- over V ,problem on that 14 degree curve. Bigie Crane was in there and the track was open in 12 hours.
One trouble was the ground was still moving. They (the SP) had dumped all kinds of fill. A year or two later there was a broken up "B" style case poking, that was poking its way out at the bottom of the fill. (Thats a long wasy down.)
It was about the 4th derailment. The SP finally got their crap together and got it done. I was on a helper with SP Snuffy on the first shove. Moved 2 car lengths and off the rail it went.
