The SW8's (and the SW900's, for that matter) were originally classified as "Diesel Freight" units (as opposed to "Diesel Switcher") and the dynamic braking feature was originally intended for use on SP's Schellville Branch, the SD&AE's El Cajon Branch and the NWP. Many of the units eventually had the feature disconnected or not repaired after a final failure.
