First & Mission in San Francisco, 1970 and 1982

First and Mission Streets April 1970. Richard Nixon had only been in office a little over a year, Western Pacific's "California Zephyr" had been gone for a month, and we were still bogged down in a war in Viet Nam.

MUNI PCC #1008 is seen crossing Mission and about to turn into the Transbay Terminal. One of the so called "Big Tens" delivered in 1948, the 1008 was now single-ended and would soldier on thru most of the 1970's. With the construction of the MUNI Metro underground, she was fitted with a pantograph and a hole cut into the roof so the new wire could be seen and tested. Still on the MUNI roster as a work car, it is the only PCC to ever run in the Market St. tunnel.

All the buildings in the immediate background are now gone. California Motor Express folded with de-regulation, and as best as I can tell, all the cars are American built. The "C" cab CME bobtail was an example of a design Ford produced for over 20 years. At one time, Foster's Cafeterias were a San Francisco landmark.

Regular streetcar servive on Market came to an end (or so we thought) on September 20th, 1982. On that day "Baby Ten" #1031, one of the last PCC's built in the U.S., turns off First into the Transbay loop. The MUNI still has #1031 for possible future restoration.
