It's interesting to note that there is not a single F40PH in the photo. Here, at least, the SDP40F and the P30CH still reigned.
At the time, one of the P30CH assignments was the "Colonial" to and from Newport News, Va., which had replaced the tidewater section of the "James Whitcomb Riley" mid-year. At the time, it ran all the way to Boston. I recall taking the "Colonial" from Newport News to Philadelphia in December of 1976. We had a P30CH and an Amfleet consist that included an ex-U.S. Army kitchen car-turned-baggage. and switched to an electric "motor" in D.C. for the trip up the NEC.
