The cars in the "Pendo" trainsets (as they're often called by UK railfans) are semipermanently coupled together and do not use either Scharfenberg or screw-link couplers to connect the cars toghether; Scharfenberg-type couplers are used to couple the trainsets toghether if needed and also to allow specially equipped Class 57 "Thunderbird" locomotives to power the trains on non-electrified lines such as the route from Crewe to Holyhead in northern Wales.
