UP ballast hoppers have had the solar panels to charge the battery boxes that activate the bottom dumps on ballast cars for several years. They were operated by a push button located on the A or B end of the car to unload the ballast. Before that, it used to be a couple of MW employees on each side of the car with a tamping bar to open and close the bottom dumps and a tie under the wheels to spread ballast. Things have changed... What is "CBA" Anon ?
