Some things to ponder. Even after rehabilitation, Tennessee Pass will be a 25MPH train by regulation because of the grade. Not exactly fast commuter rail. The buyer wants the line to ship fracking supplies to Utah and Oil to the gulf, so the whole “environmentally friendly” aspect of this falls a little flat. An oil spill in the Eagle River? It’s a real possibility. Freight lines carry anything someone wants to ship, including hazardous materials. During its heyday, there were as many as 30 trains a day on that line. There’s probably $2 billion of new development sitting within a few hundred feet of that rail line today. Remember what an airhorn sounds like? You will, because they will be sounded at crossings and other populous areas. 30 airhorns a day, at any hour of the day, whether you live on the valley floor or above it, you will hear it. So, those are some of the tradeoffs for the possibility of a 25MPH commuter train.
