That may be true. I personally never saw any paperwork from the transaction. All I can state is what I was told by a D&H Mechanical Dept. employee whom I kept in contact with for many years after my visit to the Colonie Shop in May 1977, about the group of 30 or so units that went to Mexico.
So, it could've been a lease/purchase. In any event, we know what ultimately happened.
As an aside, I'm not aware of anyone at SP who was shocked or surprised by the condition of the U33C's it sent to Mexico were in when they were returned. (That's why SP didn't send them any "good" units.)
