Clem Tillier proposed an alignment that involve steeper gradients that would reduce the amount of civil works and cut the cost of a Tejon crossing. I believe the idea is that even with a 4% grade you would still retain some high speeds(especially by Amtrak standards)and you know the story about the advantages of a straight line.
