PTC does not look at sidings or Switches when running on Approach signal or better The only thing PTC does is enforce speed and stopping. Your current max speed and the next target speed are showing on the screen. In CTC speed on main can't exceed 30 mph if there is no time lock or signal to act upon if trains clear up at that point. When Fresno main was upgraded to CTC the area at Ashlan Ave had a 30 mph speed restriction placed on it until there was a signal put on the yard lead. In the scenario that was presented I would have to be operating at restricted speed for PTC to prompt for switch position, I could still take the siding, but I would have to perform a track selection after the engine occupied the siding if not operating at restricted speed. PTC will know the length of track and enforce a stop once the other end is reached. Once in the siding and locked in the train would report clear. When the dispatcher grants the authority to leave the PTC will remove the red hash-box and replace it with a yellow hash-box for restricted speed when there is no signal to come out on. In General all the ABS territories that I work don't have PTC.
