Non controlled sidings like Tobin or Twain in the canyon only used to set out equip or work trains. Redding siding CTC, enter through the crossovers in the middle and train must report clear when all switches are lined and locked, even though the Dispatcher see's that the track indication is gone. A good example of the original post would be Truckee 9.14 double track between RV208 and RV205, if I was going to go into the siding and clear up I would take the siding and then select the new track that I was on so PTC would no what signal or end of limits were on the other end. Per Union Pacific rules trains can't clear up in CTC at hand throw switches that do no have a time lock or come out signal if main track speed exceeds 20 mph, rule 10.2. I was trying to explain what PTC does and does not do when it comes to leaving main tracks. Any time that switching or set outs are being done the system is put into restricted mode which disengages the signal system and sets the max speed at 20 mph. Going into Oroville yard would be another example of clearing up on non CTC tracks once the siding has been cleared. From a practical standpoint if I'm going into a yard to end the trip once I stop for switches or the entering signal the system is usually logged out before going into the yard.
