I don't have any knowledge of SP operations on the branch, but in 1967, the Santa Fe's Arvin local operated in the daytime.
Sometimes, the Santa Fe ran two trains a day on the line (around June of 1967, I saw a meet between the regular Arvin local and a train of empty sugar beet cars).
When business on the branch slowed in the winter, it wasn't unusual for the Santa Fe to run just a locomotive and caboose from their Bakersfield yard to Magunden, the station on the SP main line where the branch started, and then simply return to the yard. I presume this was due to union agreements calling for the train to operate every day. I thought this was really wasteful.
By 1975, the Santa Fe was operating the Arvin local at night. At times, it would have up to 70 refrigerator cars.
